Tooling up for Security by John Naylor - Director of Product Security, Ross Video
Abstract
Ross Video has designed and manufactured live production equipment for over 40 years. Its main customers are household names: national and local broadcasters.
At the end of the 1980’s the broadcast industry underwent a profound technological change as analog equipment was replaced by digital equivalents. This shift caused changes to the way people involved in live production did their jobs, and it also enabled new, more efficient ways of working as production was easier to automate.
The industry is currently in the throes of a similarly wide-reaching change as production equipment is ever more likely to be implemented and delivered as software services instead of function specific hardware; and the audio and video content being produced is transported over IP fabrics instead of industry-specific distribution infrastructure. The drivers for this change are economic with producers seeking increased utilization, flexibility, dynamic scaling of operations and the ability to rapidly deploy new services.
And their threat surface just got significantly larger.
In the wake of several high-profile attacks (TV5Monde, Sony Pictures) content producers have started to look at their supply chain risks and require products that are significantly more secure from their suppliers.
This presentation is about how Ross Video has responded to these demands which has amounted to a cultural change that affects its people, products, processes and organization. And how it has sought to improve its overall security maturity from a low base.
Speaker's Biography.
John Naylor is a products guy who has been creating the tools used by digital artists and producers for over 30 years. As Director of Product Security, and something of a neophyte in cyber security, it’s his responsibility to plan and execute Ross Video’s product security strategy. His objective in making this presentation is as much to learn as it is to inform.
He’s an (ISC)2 Associate and serves on the board of its Alamo chapter.
